Chapter 20

“Tell me you found out something,” Weber said hopefully when Captain Sweeney arrived at the Sheriff’s Office an hour later.

“I wish I did. I was on the phone most of the morning trying to salvage a case down in Globe that is going to go south. Cops down there busted a guy for a dozen different petty thefts and burglaries, and it turned out he is the brother-in-law to one of their guys. They caught him red-handed, then his wife put pressure on her brother, the cop, to do something. And the damn fool did. Suddenly a bunch of the evidence went missing. Evidence he had access to. They executed a search warrant at his house and found some of it there, but the chain of evidence has been broken and their case went out the window. So, it looks like Globe is out a cop and the original perp may walk.”

“That sucks.”

“Yes, it does. Meanwhile, on the situation here, I’ve talked to two of the possibilities, the ones you already ruled out. That guy named Bischoff and the other one, Wilder. Bischoff seems like a nice enough guy, but that Wilder’s a piece of work. He’s got a wise ass attitude. You’d think he was somebody important and not a bottom feeding thief. You said you didn’t find a computer at his place, but I’m still not ready to cross him off my list. What about the third one, MacGregor? Is he still in the wind?”

“So far,” Weber said, then told him about the sightings of the suspect in New Mexico. “We seized his computer and we’re going through it now.”

“Wait a minute. You seized his computer?”

“Yeah. His wife gave us permission to search it. It’s community property.”

“Sheriff, you didn’t think maybe my people should be the ones doing that? Isn’t that why you brought in an outside investigator?”

“There are extenuating circumstances, Captain.”

“Such as?”

“MacGregor has a lot of photographs of his wife on the computer. Photographs that she wouldn’t be comfortable with the whole world looking at.”

“I’ve got to be honest with you, Sheriff Weber. I don’t really care what makes his wife feel comfortable. Who’s to say she’s not covering for him?”

“I guarantee you she’s not covering. She’s done with him. That’s why she’s at the women’s shelter.”

“Who is looking at the files on that computer?”

“Mary Caitlin, my administrative assistant, and Deputy Fuchette.”

“Are you freaking kidding me, Sheriff?” Sweeney did not try to hide the irritation in his voice. “You don’t think that’s a little bit out of line? The alleged victim searching the possible perpetrator’s computer? Not to mention the fact that she’s been suspended by the Town Council and shouldn’t even be here?”

“She wasn’t suspended, she’s on paid administrative leave.”

“Don’t split hairs with me, Sheriff.” The anger in the DPS investigator’s voice was mirrored in his face. “I don’t have time for that kind of nonsense.”

“I’m not splitting hairs. I was trying to exercise discretion for the sake of Mrs. MacGregor.”

“Okay, cards on the table time, Sheriff.
